Electronic Design Automation and IEEE SA OPEN

Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry has long embraced open-source before it was a term.  Circuit analysis tools like SPICE became popular at the dawn of EDA by code-sharing academics.  Industry joined with governments to promote digital design language standards that resulted in the IEEE 1076™ (VHDL) in the 1980s.  The VHDL standard was flexible to promote further concepts to standardize on logic types and more.  Much of these concepts are VHDL source code that was either embedded into a standard or made available for simple download.  With the IEEE’s introduction of IEEE SA Open, the VHDL team has been able to migrate its codebase to adopt best open-source development practices.  VHDL is just one of the EDA standards where open-source is important and the IEEE SA Open platform is just beginning to be adopted for many other design automation needs.  We will explore how IEEE SA Open will benefit academia and industry for new and evolving EDA standards.

Raising the Maturity Level of Open Source

IEEE SA OPEN is a comprehensive open source development platform that harnesses the power of familiar open source development tools with IEEE's unparalleled member network, technical expertise and resources with a goal to accelerate innovation and enable technological advancements that positively impact the way people live, work, and communicate. Come learn how you can participate in this landmark project!

Dennis Brophy, Director of Strategic Business Development - Siemens EDA

Dennis Brophy is Director of Strategic Business Development in the Design Verification Technology group at Siemens EDA where he manages a global interoperability program to promote product integrations with the company’s functional verification products.  He manages group standardization strategy and has a long history of successful collaboration with industry peers for end user benefit.

Dennis has been in the electronic design automation industry for the past 41 years.  He was first with Hewlett-Packard for five years where, as a software engineer, he worked on early PCB design automation systems and later became a product manager and launched HP’s electronic design automation services business.  He then joined Mentor Graphics, now Siemens EDA, where he has held several positions the past 36 years.

Dennis received a B.S. from the University of California at Davis in electrical engineering and computer engineering.

Silona Bonewald, Executive Director - IEEE SA OPEN

Bonewald joins IEEE SA Open after serving as Vice President of Community Architecture at Hyperledger, a global open source collaborative effort hosted by The Linux Foundation, where she integrated leaders in finance, banking, Internet of Things (IoT), supply chains, and manufacturing. Other notable career accomplishments include, while with PayPal, pioneering the InnerSource process; for Siemens AG, creating a cutting-edge and Six Sigma-compliant e-commerce website; and for Ubisoft, creating an international content management system (CMS) architecture.
